About me
Salyi has an MA in Liberal Arts with emphases in Psychology, Counseling Educational School Psychology, and Ethnic Studies from Wichita State University. She's conducted research and presented at conferences on best practices to help increase resiliency in at-risk student populations including first-generation, low-income, non-native speakers, Asian-Americans, African-Americans, returning adults and students with disabilities. She has worked in higher education for over 25 years providing academic advising, financial aid and career counseling, and technology training to help students improve their skills while increasing their career options in providing for their families. Salyi has worked with non-natives speakers and began teaching ELL's since 2000. She has worked at the Wichita Indochinese Center since 2018 where she taught IDEA class, which integrated and increased student knowledge in the use of technology while improving their English skills. She has also successfully utilized the modules offered through the IDEA platform to increase English literacy skills of workers through Butler Community College's AO-K at Work program. Salyi is currently teaching Cross-TREK, an intrastate online ESL class designed by KBOR serving students from four different community colleges in the state of Kansas, while encouraging them to continue their studies through work and post-secondary education. This year, Salyi transitioned to her new role as the Director of Retention where she is able to put her years of retention studies and best practices to use by helping student populations in need of support achieve academic success.
